For fiscal year 2022, the DEV team’s efforts resulted in over $211 million in new gifts and commitments, which helped to publicly launch Georgia Tech’s largest comprehensive campaign in the Institute’s history Transforming Tomorrow: The Campaign for Georgia Tech which is intended to bring over $2 billion in new commitments and gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations, and other organizations. One of the most significant priorities within Transforming Tomorrow is ensuring access of the brightest undergraduate, graduate and professional students to Georgia Tech, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Brad L. Hastings, CFRE - Assistant Vice President of Development

Brad Hastings is a seasoned senior executive with over two decades of exemplary experience in strategic leadership and fundraising. Currently serving as the Assistant Vice President of Development at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Brad oversees fundraising efforts for multiple colleges and units, guiding his teams towards impactful philanthropic endeavors. His role involves not only securing major gifts but also providing strategic and operational leadership and fostering collaboration among academic and administrative leaders to maximize philanthropic impact.

Brad's dedication and expertise have yielded substantial results, with his teams securing over $130.3 million in philanthropic support during his tenure as Executive Director of Development for the College of Engineering. Since coming to Georgia Tech in 2017, Brad has led successful solicitations totaling more than $43 million, including gifts such as an $11.2 million contribution to establish a software engineering center.

Brad holds a Bachelor of Science in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Certified in Fundraising Management and a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), Brad is committed to professional excellence in the field of development.

Brad and his wife, Jessica, have three children and live in northwest Atlanta.   

Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts

Liberal arts have always been a part of Georgia Tech, with English one of six subjects offered when the university opened its doors in 1888. Georgia Tech has not stopped innovating since. Today, their core goals are to enrich knowledge-making processes, encourage discovery, and advance problem-solving approaches in ways that incorporate philosophical, socio-historical, cultural, linguistic, political, and economic perspectives and ethical principles.

Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts' six schools (Economics; History and Sociology; Literature, Media, and Communication; Modern Languages; Public Policy; and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs) and 18 research centers offer programs and experiences that redefine what the humanities and social sciences can be.

Richard Utz is an academic leader who has served as senior associate dean in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (IAC) and as chair of the School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC). Under Utz’s leadership, LMC experienced consequential growth in external research funding, faculty productivity, and enrollment and diversity in its undergraduate and graduate programs, and it added to its curriculum minors in Black Media Studies, Science Fiction, and Social Justice (with the School of History and Sociology), and a profession ready master’s degree in Global Media and Cultures (with the School of Modern Languages and the Library). Utz also oversaw the renovation and repurposing of multiple spaces to further student success and belonging such as the Undergraduate Hub, the Sci-Fi Lab, the Career Origination Lab, and the Digital Integrative Liberal Arts Center, funded by the Mellon Foundation. During his tenure, LMC saw the appointment of its first Regents’ Professor, and he incentivized research that reaches out to educated general publics, significantly amplifying his school’s reputation. He led these efforts by example, publishing two editions of the unit’s calling card essay collection, Humanistic Perspectives in a Technological World, and sharing his views in the Chronicle of Higher EducationInside Higher EdTimes Higher Education, and Issues in Science and Technology

As a leader at the College level, Utz has overseen faculty affairs processes and professional development, including a comprehensive resource hub and workshop series on reappointment, promotion, and tenure and a faculty-to-faculty mentoring process. He served as co-champion for building and implementing the Ivan Allen College Strategic Plan, organized high impact events on integrating the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences with STEM fields, and played a role in strategic communication and development activities, garnering funds for LGBTQ+ projects and international summer internships. He also represented the college to internal and external constituencies, serving on the Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council, the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage Selection Committee, and the Arts@Tech Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

Before joining Georgia Tech in 2012, Utz held administrative and faculty appointments at Western Michigan University, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, University of Northern Iowa, and Technische Universität Dresden. He received his Ph.D. in English and German Literary Studies and Linguistics from the University of Regensburg, Germany, and his scholarship centers on medievalism, medieval culture and literature, the interconnections between humanistic inquiry and science/technology, reception study, and the formation of cultural memories and identities. An impactful scholar, he was a plenary speaker at the world’s largest international congress in Medieval Studies, served for eleven years as President of the International Society for the Study of Medievalism, and helps shape his field of study on the editorial advisory board of journals and book series based in Australia, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, and the United States. Utz has shared his research in three monographs, 21 (co)edited essay collections and special journal issues, 80 journal articles and book chapters, and 70 book reviews. His work has been translated into French, Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish, and he has received media attention by the Christian Science MonitorFrankfurter Allgemeine ZeitungForbesNew York TimesSputnik MundoSüddeutsche ZeitungTime Magazine, and Serious Eats (seriously!). Utz’s has been recognized with a German Academic Exchange Service Teaching Fellowship, the Johann von Spix International Visiting Professorship at Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, the Iowa State Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence, and as Director’s Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s Dumbarton Oaks Research Library.

Position Summary

The Associate Director of Development will act as the front-line development officer responsible for assisting with the planning and implementation of a coordinated program of fundraising activities, leveraging the counsel and support of a seasoned development director serving as team leader and supervisor. The Associate Director of Development will use professional relationship building skills to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors and prospective donors capable of making gifts of $25,000 or more.

This position will support special events to involve and cultivate major gift donors and prospects as well as identify stewardship opportunities for major gift donors. The Associate Director will collaborate with deans, school chairs, and faculty, and coordinate with other development and alumni relations staff. This role provides an opportunity to broaden knowledge of fundraising approaches. This position is expected to contribute to team results while building long term, meaningful donor relationships. Typically solicits gifts in the range of $25,000 to $250,000 and is accountable for raising up to $750,000 per year. Manages a prospect pool of up to 200 prospects.

The Associate Director of Development will interact on a regular basis with: Alumni, Parents, Corporate and Foundation Representatives, Staff, and Volunteers. This position will typically advise and counsel: Unit Leadership, Deans, Development Officers, and Faculty.

The Role and Responsibilities

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the design and/or implementation of comprehensive fundraising plans for assigned college, school, program, region, or constituency.
     
  • Use professional relationship building skills to develop and implement plans and strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift donors and prospective donors. Close major gifts and commitments, both personally and in coordination with supervisor, with a typical gift range of $25,000 to $250,000, and an average annual fundraising accountability up to $750,000.
     
  • Establish and maintain a high degree of collaboration with other development officers and staff, as well as deans, school chairs, faculty, and other Institute academic and executive officers.
     
  • Submit timely contact reports, prospect plans, and solicitations into tracking system.
     
  • Participate in the preparation of written development materials including case statements, proposals, impact reports, and fundraising initiative/campaign related literature for assigned college, school, and/or program(s).
     
  • Support special events and/or staff advisory board meetings to involve and cultivate major gift donors and prospective donors.
     
  • This position will work closely with the dean, school chairs, and other academic leaders in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts to advance the vision, mission, and philanthropic priorities of the College.
     
  • Develop strong, interactive relationships with key constituents (individuals and organizations) to increase philanthropic support for the College.
     
  • Work to advance support of the College within the recently launched Transforming Tomorrow comprehensive campaign, as well as future capital campaigns.
     
  • Ensure an effective stewardship effort is in place to engage donors across all levels of giving through transparent reporting on use of funds and the impact of philanthropy across the College.
     
  • Collaborate with DEV colleagues and campus partners to formulate creative cultivation plans, successful solicitation strategies, and effective stewardship efforts to maximize the lifetime engagement and support of the Institutes most generous supporters.
     
  • Meet/Exceed annual fundraising goals as an individual development officer.
     
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • KNOWLEDGE – Knowledge of fundraising approaches and strong interpersonal skills, ethical standards, and good judgement.
     
  • SKILLS – Excellent skills in building long-term relationships, and persuasive written and verbal communication skills. Requires skills in prioritizing, negotiating, strategic planning, project management, program administration and organization.
     
  • ABILITIES – Use of office related computer applications is required. Travel is an essential part of the position as is participation in evening and weekend activities. Focus primarily on securing major gifts and grants from alumni, other individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
     
  • Two to three years of progressively responsible experience in development/advancement and/or relevant experience in sales and marketing, or other related fields.
     
  • Travel is an essential part of the position as is participation in evening and weekend activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two plus years of proven development experience and results in soliciting and closing annual gifts and/or major gifts, and/or experience in a Development Services role in a higher education setting and a campaign environment.
