The Challenge

Amidst growing media scrutiny, our client became entangled in a politically sensitive issue that threatened to undermine its sterling reputation. The absence of a Head of Public & Government Affairs for over three years had left the organization exposed, with no strategic leadership to guide its public relations efforts. The staff, accustomed to operating independently, underestimated the need for such a role, leaving the organization vulnerable to unfavorable media narratives that prioritized sensationalism over accuracy.

Boyden was invited to meet with our potential client’s CEO and CHRO to offer our professional advice on this critical management issue. By the end of the meeting, the CEO advised the CHRO to retain Boyden’s services, confident in our ability to deliver the right solution to address the existing deficiency.

The Solution

Understanding the urgency, we persuaded the CEO to expedite the recruitment of a Chief Corporate Communications Officer. This individual would play a critical role in unifying and leading internal and external communications. We conducted a comprehensive search, evaluating over 500 candidates across top PR firms, federal agencies, and major corporations. Our rigorous assessment focused on culture fit, leadership capabilities, and the ability to navigate complex media landscapes. Within a short timeframe, we presented 17 top-tier candidates, swiftly securing an agreement with one who was poised to relocate and assume the role.

Shortly after the initial selection, a new Chair and CEO took charge, challenging our prior finalist candidate selection. Adapting to this shift, we rapidly identified another top candidate, presenting him within three days.

The Results

This candidate became the new CEO’s first strategic hire, marking the beginning of a successful partnership. Over the next five years, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer played a pivotal role in guiding the organization through various challenges, earning the trust and confidence of the CEO. This successful placement established a long-term relationship with the client leading to multiple subsequent assignments with Boyden that further solidified their leadership team.
