The Law Society of British Columbia is pleased to announce Gigi Chen-Kuo has accepted the position of Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director, effective January 6, 2025.
Chen-Kuo brings to the Law Society more than 30 years’ experience leading teams and delivering innovative solutions to complex challenges. Most recently, she served as the Chief Operating Officer of TransLink where she also held leadership positions such as General Counsel and Executive Vice-President, Corporate Services. Her experience in the complex and dynamic environment of TransLink has established a strong track record in managing change in the service of the public interest, which will position her well in providing leadership to the Law Society.
Chen-Kuo has extensive experience in governance and serves on the boards of Coast Capital Savings Credit Union, the British Columbia Automobile Association, Transportation Investment Corporation and Union Gospel Mission. Past board appointments include Consumer Protection BC, Commissionaires BC and the Boys and Girls Club of South Coast BC. She is also a member of the Allard School of Law Dean’s Advisory Council at the University of British Columbia. In 2022, Chen-Kuo was nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the Business & the Professions category and was a shortlisted nominee for the Women’s Infrastructure Network’s Outstanding Leader Award.

As Chen-Kuo steps into her new role, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to CEO/Executive Director Don Avison, KC, whose distinguished leadership has been transformational for the organization and its staff during the last seven years. Avison has effectively steered the Law Society through significant initiatives, including advancing Truth and Reconciliation, implementing innovative regulatory policies, and responding to the single legal regulator legislation, as well as ensuring the Law Society continued to operate effectively during the pandemic. His strategic foresight, commitment to our mandate and passion for the independence of lawyers and the rule of law has enriched the Law Society and strengthened our organization.
