I used the time between Christmas and New Year's Eve to reflect on the impact of artificial intelligence on the consulting industry. In particular, I began with the hypothesis that research and analysis activities might no longer require consultants in the future. Figures, data, and facts would be provided by AI, leaving experienced consultants to distill the "so what" for the client. However, after exploring this multifaceted topic, I concluded that my initial hypothesis was incorrect. Instead, more technically savvy consultants are already becoming essential at the entry level.

Where human judgment and experience once served as the sole pillars of expertise, today’s consultants need a new skills profile that combines technological understanding with creative problem-solving. In my opinion, this creates specific areas for action:

Traditional consulting approaches often involved time-consuming tasks like data collection, analysis, and report generation. AI technologies, such as natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning, now enable these tasks to be completed faster and more accurately. However, this doesn’t signal the end of the consulting industry. Instead, the focus is shifting. Consultants must critically interpret AI-generated insights and contextualize them for their clients. Effective use of technical tools is becoming a fundamental requirement.
2. Expanded Requirements for Data Expertise
With the increasing use of AI, data expertise is becoming more important. Consultants need to understand not only how AI systems work but also how to train and optimize them. Knowledge of data analysis, statistics, and algorithmic decision-making is now crucial.
3. Focus on Strategic and Creative Skills
While AI handles repetitive and data-based tasks, creative thinking remains uniquely human. Developing innovative strategies, recognizing market trends, and understanding complex interpersonal or organizational dynamics are becoming central to consulting work. Consultants who blend technological solutions with human sensitivity will be particularly sought after.
4. Ethics and Regulatory Expertise
AI implementation raises ethical and regulatory questions. Consultants will increasingly mediate between technological progress and social responsibility. Expertise in data protection, AI ethics, and regulatory requirements is essential.
5. Training is the Key
The rapid pace of AI development demands continuous learning. Staying relevant in a changing technological landscape requires ongoing education. Consulting firms must invest in employee training and build interdisciplinary, hybrid teams that combine technical knowledge with industry-specific expertise.
The integration of AI into consulting will not only transform the nature of work but also redefine the skills profile of consultants. Tomorrow’s successful consultants will be hybrid professionals: technology experts, creative problem solvers, strategic thinkers, and ethical advisors. Those who adapt and expand their skills will thrive in the opportunities AI offers.
