Boyden is pleased to share the appointment news of Deborah Morrison, a recruitment led by Collin Ritch

Ottawa, ON - Mar 24, 2022

The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Deborah Morrison as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective April 22, 2025. With an impressive background in non-profit leadership, public education, advocacy, and government relations, Morrison is poised to lead the Institute into an exciting new chapter of growth and impact.

With over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit and charitable sector, Morrison has been an innovative leader in youth and educational programming, media production, and business development. Most recently, as the Director of Publications at Universities Canada, she led business development for the national award-winning magazine, University Affairs and the development of UniversityStudy.ca, a free all-in-one resource for students navigating post-secondary education in Canada. A strong proponent of youth engagement throughout her career, as CEO at Experiences Canada, she led a series of youth leadership initiatives on diversity, reconciliation, and allyship to inspire them to become more actively involved in shaping the future they want for their communities. As an active volunteer with a deep passion for history and heritage conservation, Morrison also served on the Board of Directors for the National Capital Commission (NCC) from 2018 to 2023.

“The Board is excited to welcome Deborah as our new CEO,” said Lesley Cabott RPP, FCIP ICD D, President of CIP. “These are unprecedented times when staying focused on building resilient communities has never been more important. Her expertise and energy will be invaluable in our advocacy on behalf of professional planners across Canada.”

“I am honoured to join the Canadian Institute of Planners at such a pivotal time for the profession,” said Morrison. “Planners shape the communities we live in every day—often in ways we don’t even notice. From speeding up housing development to designing climate-resilient spaces, and even ensuring the sidewalks beneath our feet are safe and accessible, their work is the backbone of our communities. I look forward to working with our members and partners to share the essential role of professional planners in communities across the country.”

CIP extends its sincere gratitude to Karen Meades, who served as the interim CEO during this transition period. Her leadership was essential during this period of change and allowed the search committee the flexibility and time to find the right leader to steer the future of the Institute.

As the national voice of the planning profession, CIP remains committed to supporting members in building fulfilling lifelong careers, fostering an inclusive and welcoming profession, and ensuring that planners have a seat at decision-making tables on key issues. Together, we will continue to create thriving, resilient communities where people can live, work, and play.
