October 16, 2020 - London, ON
The Board of Trustees of Brescia University College is pleased to announce that Cheryl Jensen has been appointed as Interim Principal effective October 19, 2020.
With over thirty years of experience in higher education, Ms. Jensen was the first female president at Algonquin College, retiring in August 2019. Prior to her presidency at Algonquin, she held the title of Vice President, Academic, at Mohawk College. Jensen first joined Mohawk as a Chemical Engineering Technology professor in 1983 and served as Dean, Executive Dean, and Vice President of Engineering Technology, Apprenticeship and Corporate Training.
A graduate of McMaster University with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Certificate in the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel, Ms. Jensen also holds a Master of Education in Organizational and Administrative Studies from Brock University. In addition, she has completed the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Karen McKay, Chair of Brescia’s Board of Trustees says, “We are excited to welcome Cheryl to Brescia. Her experience as a postsecondary president, as well as her outstanding professional achievements and community service make her the ideal Interim Principal to lead Brescia at this time and continue advancing our mission of educating future women leaders.”
Already keenly aligned with Brescia’s altruistic mission, Jensen believes in volunteering and giving back to her community. This is evident in her service on the Boards of Ottawa Network for Education, Invest Ottawa, the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship, and the Ottawa Beechwood Cemetery and Beechwood Cemetery Foundation. Jensen was also a Board member for Polytechnics Canada and a member of the Business/Higher Education Roundtable. Jensen recently joined the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Community Foundation.
A notable advocate for women’s leadership, Jensen is the recipient of a Hamilton YWCA Woman of Distinction Award, a national leadership award from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges and was recognized as one of the 2016 “Top 25” People in Ottawa. She also received the Canada 150 Ottawa West – Nepean Community Leadership Award in 2017.
“I am honoured to join the Brescia community as Interim Principal,” says Jensen. “I am excited to provide interim leadership, alongside the leadership team, students, faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees. I am committed to Brescia’s mission to educate future women leaders with wisdom, justice and compassion in a changing world.”
