Vancouver, BC - Oct 26, 2021

The Vancouver School Board has concluded it search for its next superintendent/Chief Executive Officer. Helen McGregor will take up this leadership role with the District effective January 1, 2022.

“I am honoured to join the students and staff at Vancouver School District as superintendent,” says McGregor, noting this is an exciting time for the community as VSB continues the development of its Education Plan 2026. “I look forward to engaging with students, families, educators and stakeholders as we chart an ambitious new path to support the success of all students.” As both a leader and a learner, Mrs. McGregor states she believes listening is crucial to this process and she looks forward to hearing all voices across the District. “Together, we will enhance the outstanding work being done at the District to see that all students are valued, cared for and supported to reach their full potential.”

As a public educator for more than 28 years, Mrs. McGregor’s passion is rooted in making a difference in the lives of students.

She was a superintendent of education for 11 years with the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN), a district serving more than 39,000 students. Mrs. McGregor brings a wealth of educational leadership and experiences in areas related to curriculum and curriculum support services, equity and inclusion, Indigenous education, provincial assessments, information technology, e-learning, alternative education and more. She is held in high regard for her strong focus on equity and achievement, grounded by empowering student voice and incorporating student perspectives in decision making.

“As a Board, we are excited to welcome Mrs. McGregor to Vancouver,” says Carmen Cho, Board chair. The Board, adds Cho, believes McGregor’s experience and leadership style will enrich school communities throughout the District and serve its staff well. “This journey has been a collaborative effort and our decision benefited tremendously from the input of the District’s stakeholder groups as well as partners with the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.”

Recruitment of a superintendent/CEO is the responsibility of the elected Board in accordance with the School Act and Board Policy 2. A steering committee of three trustees, supported by members of District’s staff and an executive search firm, oversaw the recruitment process. The selection of the successful candidate was determined by the full Board. The superintendent/CEO reports directly to the Board and is accountable for the efficient and effective operation of the District
