Executive Brief

Senior Accountant
Inuvialuit Regional Corporation

April 2024

Essence of the Opportunity

Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) is seeking an ambitious, high-integrity individual with the accounting expertise to oversee the financials of few of its subsidiary operating businesses. This role will be responsible for all accounting, financial controls, and financial reporting, while also seeking opportunities to streamline processes and maximize profitability.

IRC was created in 1984 to represent the Inuvialuit and their rights and benefits obtained under one of Canada's oldest comprehensive land claim agreements. With assets over $1 billion, not including vast land holdings, IRC is responsible for corporate investment, land management, and a broad range of social, cultural, and economic programs and services benefiting Inuvialuit. Its business subsidiaries have interests in retail grocery, property management, hospitality, manufacturing, transportation, and significant dealings in the oil and gas industry.

Since its inception, IRC has experienced considerable growth and increasing complexity. It has expanded its portfolio of investments with recent acquisitions and is in need of additional accounting talent to support its added scope. Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will be responsible for the accounting, financial reporting, management reporting, tax management, banking arrangements, and internal controls of these businesses. With this financial insight, the Senior Accountant will act as a strategic business partner, identifying process and operational inefficiencies and opportunities for further growth. This individual is a true leader, demonstrating integrity, a strong work-ethic, and a deep understanding of IRC’s values and objectives.

Based in the IRC corporate offices in Inuvik, NWT, the new Senior Accountant will be adaptive, open-minded, and service oriented. This an opportunity for exposure and career growth, and to develop a breadth of financial knowledge, business acumen, and leadership skills. Expansion to cover additional business and career progression are common with IRC as capable professionals are highly valued in the North.

The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise, with a minimum of a three years of accounting experience, preferably working in an organization with parallels to hospitality and retail. Candidates will need to be CPA’s or be working toward their designation and have knowledge of accounting procedures (IFRS and ASPE). Experience developing and implementing financial strategies and providing clear, timely financial and management reporting are assets. An entrepreneurial, collaborative and engaging approach will ensure success in this role. Priority will be given to Inuvialuit beneficiary candidates, and experience working within another Indigenous organization or one with parallel complexities will be highly valued.

This is a compelling opportunity for a technical financial management expert who loves accounting and reporting and welcomes working with and supporting one of Canada’s most successful and progressive Indigenous organizations in a compelling location.
