Strategic Context

The Board of Directors has crafted an ambitious new strategic plan and is working on a corresponding 3-year operational plan that will amplify the impact that this mission-focused organization can bring to international, national, and local levels of bird conservation through its research and education. One key pillar of the plan is the development and launch of a $5 million endowment fund spearheaded by Margaret Atwood to secure a legacy for future generations in Canada and internationally. The other key pillar is the creation of a new Pelee Island Bird Centre on the Island to further develop the scientific research, education and international outreach of PIBO. The new Treasurer will invest their talents and be a key team player in PIBO's next exciting chapter succeeding a life legacy of the organization’s founders.

Position Overview

The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing PIBO’s financial activities and ensuring proper management of its financial resources. They will ensure that the organization maintains accurate financial records, tracks income and expenses, and prepares financial reports for the organization's board and external stakeholders. Key tasks include oversight accountability to ensure precise financial record maintenance, budget formulation with the Executive Director, and regulation compliance.

Virtual board meetings will occur monthly through this period of transition. Initially, a thorough financial organizational assessment is required, followed by regular commitments of 8-16 hours monthly.

Excerpt From Bylaws:  Treasurer Role

The treasurer shall have general supervisory responsibility for the funds and securities of the corporation and shall see to it that full and accurate accounts of all assets, liabilities, receipts and disbursements of the corporation are kept in the books belonging to the corporation and shall supervise the deposit of all monies, securities and other valuable effects in the name and to the credit of the corporation in such chartered bank of trust company, or, in the case of securities, in such registered dealer in securities as may be designated by the board of directors from time to time.

The treasurer shall supervise the disbursement of the funds of the corporation as may be directed by proper authority and shall render to the president and directors at the regular meeting of the board of directors, or whenever they may require it, an accounting of all the transactions and a statement of the financial position, of the corporation.

The treasurer shall also perform such other duties as may from time to time be directed by the board of directors.

The powers and duties of all other officers of the Corporation shall be such as the terms of their engagement call for or the board requires of them.

The board may, from time to time and subject to the Act, vary, add to, or limit the powers and duties of any officer.

Officers are required to exercise at least the level of care, diligence, and skill that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in comparable circumstances. They are also required to act honestly, in good faith and in the best interests of the corporation, rather than in their own personal interest.

Officers are required to comply with the federal Not for Profit Act and its regulations, and the articles and by-laws of the Corporation. By-laws available on request.
