I am pleased to share that Dr. Mary Gene Saudelli has been appointed dean of education on the Fredericton campus for a five-year term, effective July 1, 2024.
Originally from St. Stephen, N.B., Dr. Saudelli is the associate dean, professor and former acting dean of the faculty of education, community, and human development at the University of the Fraser Valley. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in the department of leadership, higher & adult education. She teaches courses in International Human Rights, Cultural Literacies in a Global Context, International and Comparative Higher Education and Accessibility and Inclusion in Educational Contexts.
Committed to Truth and Reconciliation, Dr. Saudelli champions Indigenous worldviews and is dedicated to fulfilling the educational responsibilities outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action. She prioritizes Indigenous education, international relations, equity and inclusion. She is skilled in strategic visioning, teaching across different delivery modalities and mentoring in teaching, learning and research. She also excels in acquiring external and internal funding, designing curriculum and fostering intercultural engagement.
Dr. Saudelli holds a PhD in philosophy of education, an MEd in curriculum/teaching English as a second language and a bachelor's in adult education, all with distinction from Brock University. She also has a bachelor of arts in sociology and psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University and a law clerk diploma and bookkeeping certification. Dr. Saudelli has taught in secondary schools, colleges and universities in Canadian and international contexts. Her academic journey spans learning across disciplines, reflecting a commitment to excellence and lifelong learning.
Making significant contributions to the field through her research and publications, Dr. Saudelli addresses topics such as sustainable development in education, mentorship dynamics and international branch campuses. Her work has been featured in peer-reviewed journals such as Perspectives in Education, Alberta Journal of Educational Research and the Journal of Mental Health, Religion and Culture. Additionally, she has presented keynote addresses and participated in speaking engagements worldwide.
Dr. Saudelli has actively pursued professional development, enhancing her skills and knowledge through various certifications and courses. She recently completed the Diplomacy Master Class by Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice. In 2023, she finalized the Xwelítem Siyáya: Allyship and Reconciliation Building Program at the University of the Fraser Valley. Dr. Saudelli holds certifications in The Educator’s Journey to Truth and Reconciliation and Leadership in Conflict Resolution, obtained from the Justice Institute of British Columbia. She is also certified in yoga instruction and Indigenous cultural safety training and has participated in various mindfulness-based teaching and learning opportunities.
I am grateful to Dr. Sharon Wahl, UNB’s dean of education since 2018, for her ongoing dedication to fostering growth and innovation within the faculty. I wish her luck in her future endeavours.
