Ottawa, ON - Feb 01, 2022
Dr. Sharon Johnston is the new Scientific Director and associate Vice-President-research at the Institut du Savoir Montfort (ISM).
Dr. Johnston is a well-known physician and researcher. With over fifteen years of experience as a clinician investigator with the department of family medicine at the University of Ottawa, she is an associate professor at the University of Ottawa as well as a researcher at the ISM and the Bruyère Research Institute in Ottawa, Ontario. Our new associate Vice-President-research at ISM has made a name for herself through her excellence and leadership in the field.
From supporting self-management for patients with chronic disease, to developing virtual concussion exam methods to incorporating patient feedback into health system performance measurement, her career has been guided by a focus on improving Canada’s health systems. She has a particular interest in primary care service delivery. Dr. Johnston is committed to the implementation of new technologies to facilitate digital communications between practitioners and their patients. Over twenty million dollars in research grants has resulted in numerous scientific publications.
“Dr. Sharon Johnston is the ideal person to hold the reins of the Associate Vice-President-research,” said Dr. Josette-Renée Landry, CEO of the Institut du Savoir Montfort. “Her endless motivation to improve health care and her experience in the field of research, always focused on a collaborative approach, are major assets that will greatly benefit the ISM.
The new Associate Vice-President-research at the ISM has been involved in the development of major initiatives. She helped establish ‘’360 Concussion Care’’, a centre dedicated exclusively to the management of concussion-related illnesses in the Ottawa area. She also co-directed the basic research in Ontario for the provincial self-management support program for people with chronic diseases. Her research projects in this area have led to the development of new services for a variety of patients based on their needs.
“As a bilingual researcher with multiple collaborations across the country, I feel ready to support and promote our Institute’s growing expertise and innovation in the health of French-speaking minority Canadians, which is essential to our commitment to the community we serve, as well as to our national leadership,” says Dr. Johnston. “The ISM has a remarkable group of creative and diverse scientists as well as administrative staff on whom we can rely to overcome our new challenges.” The new Associate Vice-President-research earned B.A. degrees in art and law from Harvard and Cambridge Universities, a Master of Laws in Bioethics from McGill University, and a M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School before completing her residency in family medicine at McGill University. Dr. Johnston succeeds Dr. William Hogg, who has been the Interim Associate Vice-President-research and scientific director since May 2020.
