he Board of Directors at Guelph General Hospital is pleased to announce that Dr. Alex Ferguson has accepted the position of chief of staff effective December 1, 2023. Dr. Ferguson succeeds Dr. Jennifer Caspers, who has served as chief of staff since 2009.
Dr. Ferguson is currently the chief of emergency medicine at Guelph General Hospital. As an emergency medicine physician, Dr. Ferguson joined the hospital in 2012 with the goal of transforming the care experience for patients, families, caregivers, staff, and physicians. Since then he has had oversight over several portfolios including emergency medicine and psychiatry.
Amongst his many accomplishments, Dr. Ferguson most recently led a team that despite very challenging health human resource conditions continued to drive recruitment by creating a culture of teamwork, quality of care, collaboration, kindness, and support. Dr. Ferguson and his team were adaptive and willing to try new things that ensured emergency medical services were available to the Guelph-Wellington community.
“Guelph General Hospital feels like my hospital. The team here are not only colleagues, but also friends and trusted confidants. I am thrilled to start this new chapter with the hospital and be part of its continued growth,” shared Dr. Alex Ferguson.
In 2021, Dr. Ferguson completed the Advanced Health Leadership Program from the Rotman School of Management. He is currently one year away from receiving the designation of Canadian Certified Physician Executive.
Dr. Ferguson has also been the emergency department lead for the Ontario Health West Region since 2021 and a special advisor to the Rotman – OMA Physician Leadership Program.
“When we asked peers about what they thought about Alex, they shared that he was all about the patients, incredibly collaborative, and fair,” said Board Chair, David Kennedy. “Having worked at Guelph General Hospital for over 10 years he knows what opportunities exist here and what challenges await him. I really can’t think of a better person to be our new chief of staff.”
The Board of Directors would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the most recent Chief of Staff, Dr. Jennifer Caspers. Joining Guelph General Hospital 39 years ago, Dr. Caspers and has been a tremendous champion of medical, surgical, and obstetrical program. She will remain in her clinical capacity following the orientation of Dr. Ferguson as chief of staff.
“Dr. Caspers has devoted her career to Guelph General Hospital; putting her heart and soul into caring for those she has worked for and with. We are grateful this is not goodbye but rather see you soon,” shared Board Chair, David Kennedy.
