I am delighted to announce Sarah Virani as our new Chief Legal Officer, effective January 13, 2025.
Sarah is a healthcare lawyer whose career has been focused on serving hospitals and healthcare providers. She began her career at a national law firm, defending healthcare providers and hospitals in civil claims, Consent and Capacity Board hearings, privileging matters and regulatory proceedings. Sarah later served as in-house counsel at SickKids where she honed expertise documenting relationships via contract, providing strategic advice to leadership and serving as corporate secretary to a number of hospital corporations. In her current role, Sarah serves as Senior Legal Counsel in a boutique health law firm providing privacy, risk management and compliance advice to all manner of healthcare provider organizations.
Sarah has expertise advising on large-scale healthcare collaborations and is a trusted partner when working with government, police, community partners and other key stakeholders. She is passionate about the delivery of context-driven, high-quality care and the advancement of mental health and addictions research. Sarah has a team-oriented, can-do attitude and is proud of her ability to provide practical and creative solutions in challenging situations.
In this position, Sarah will be responsible for overseeing the Legal Services, Risk and Security teams. This key role provides legal and strategic advice and oversight for a broad spectrum of Hospital operational matters, including compliance, business/clinical administration, contracts (including support to corporate/commercial and research lawyers), and mental health and other legal proceedings. Sarah will advise and work collaboratively with Hospital leaders to bring issues to the best resolution and advise senior management on all legal matters impacting CAMH.
Sarah has a Bachelor of Arts in Health Studies from Queen’s University and a Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School. She is recognized as an industry leader, having been selected multiple times by her peers as one of Canada’s Best Lawyers in the Ones to Watch category. Sarah regularly serves as faculty for Osgoode Professional Development’s Certificate in Health Law, Certificate in Mental Health Law and its Certificate in Clinical Risk Management. Until recently, she also sat on the Research Ethics Board at Oak Valley Health.
Sarah’s deep knowledge of the healthcare sector, together with her legal expertise, will be invaluable towards achieving our vision of Health redefined.
