Executive Brief

Legal Counsel
Inuvialuit Regional Corporation

January 2021

Key Opportunities & Challenges

Complex & Dynamic Organization: Ever since its inception, IRC has experienced considerable growth, currently being valued at over $1 billion. Concurrently, its structure and operations have become increasingly complex to accommodate and enable such size and expansion. Combining local government, community development, investment and operating business divisions all managed by a single financial back office, the organization has a unique tax structure and array of other complexities for the executive staff to navigate. The new Legal Counsel will need to possess technical depth and breadth in order to effectively grapple with such complexities that will only increase as the organization enters its next phase of development.

Reliable Counsel: IRC is a highly complex organization with a broad range of legal requirements related to its corporate operations, operating companies and community development divisions. IRC is one of Canada’s largest and most advanced Indigenous organizations, so its standards are high and the scope of its contracts and operations are significant. The organization is reliant on competent, trustworthy and reliable legal advice to ensure its interests are protected and the objectives and principals of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement are protected.

Subsidiary Support: IRC’s many subsidiary organizations cover a broad spectrum of business and social interests and will have differing and wide-ranging needs for support. The new Legal Counsel will be a critical resource to these subsidiaries in contract management, negotiations, financing, etc. A humble, helpful and competent approach will be highly valued by employees and shareholders alike.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management: IRC is a unique organization with diverse interests, stakeholders, and operations to which the new Legal Counsel will be exposed. As such, the ability to quickly grasp and immerse seamlessly with IRC’s culture, structure and priorities and appreciate the perspectives of beneficial shareholders whom the organization was created to serve will be crucial in determining the success of this role.

Life in the North: Life in Inuvik will especially appeal to those who appreciate rural environments, fantastic natural beauty and tight-knit communities. In alignment with IRC’s mission to preserve and improve Inuvialuit economic, social and cultural wellbeing, the new Legal Counsel will want to actively integrate with the Inuvik and other Inuvialuit communities in order to gain understanding and appreciation of the perspectives of the shareholders and other stakeholders throughout the North.
