Opening its doors in 1934 as Eastern New Mexico Junior College, the College added a third year and officially changed its name to Eastern New Mexico College in 1939. The College became accredited as a four-year institution in 1947. Eastern New Mexico College began offering master’s degree programs in 1949 and the state legislature of New Mexico officially approved a name change to Eastern New Mexico University in 1955.
For over 90 years ENMU has prepared students for careers and advanced study. Its mission is to emphasize liberal learning, freedom of inquiry, cultural diversity, and whole student life. ENMU serves students of traditional age, adult learners and organizations through undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Eastern community envisions a university where every faculty and staff member instills in one another and in students a sense of social and cultural awareness and responsibility. The University accomplishes this by embracing and fostering diversity and inclusion among students, faculty and staff. The University engages well-qualified and caring faculty and staff who treat one another with respect and work together to accomplish institutional goals and mentor students.
Campuses:
The ENMU System consists of a four-year campus (ENMU-Portales) and two-year campuses ENMU-Roswell and ENMU-Ruidoso.
ENMU-Portales, the main campus, is home to the office of the chancellor and offers some 63 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. It enjoys a 17:1 student-faculty ratio, and a 97% student satisfaction rate. Its tuition rates are among the lowest in the region, and Texas students within a 135-mile radius qualify for ENMU’s in-state tuition rate. Popular undergraduate majors are business administration, communicative disorders, social work and applied arts and sciences. Portales is, a rural, agricultural community with an authentic Southwestern, small town culture, located eleven miles from Cannon Air Force Base and twenty miles from the Texas border.
ENMU-Roswell is the larger of ENMU’s branch campuses. It is a community college of 1,628 students, offering over 73 associate degree and certificate programs across 33 majors/areas of study. A full range of career advising services are available, in addition to a customized training program (Center for Workforce and Community Development) for business and industry and a unique program for students with disabilities. Roswell is the fifth largest city in New Mexico and also the home of New Mexico Military Institute.
ENMU-Ruidoso is the newest member of the ENMU system, designated a branch community college campus by the State of New Mexico in 2005. Enrolling over 626 students in Fall 2022, it offers 43 different associate degrees and certificates across 23 majors/areas of study. It also serves the mountain village of Ruidoso and surrounding areas.offering community education classes, customized training workshops and adult basic education courses.
Finance:
In total, the ENMU system administers operating budgets in excess of $120 million. While the campuses are governed centrally, each is responsible for its own revenue streams which are not transferrable. Capital outlay funding for the main campus consists primarily of state allocations and private gifts. Capital outlay funding for the branch campuses consists of state allocations and locally authorized bonds. The ENMU Foundation has total assets of $25,000,000, and provides approximately $550,000 annually in scholarship support to ENMU students.
For many years the State of New Mexico has led the nation in its financial support for public higher education. Currently, public funding accounts for approximately 50% of ENMU Portales’s overall operating budget and 75% of the budgets of its branch campuses. Leadership is keenly aware that the state is not immune from the broad national trend of steadily declining allocations for public education and is taking steps to fortify and increase other revenue sources.

Mission:
ENMU Foundation's Mission Statement:
To provide private funding for those programs and scholarships which are not covered by state appropriations, and to build acceptance of and support for the University.
History:
The Office of Development was established in July 1978 by ENMU President Warren Armstrong. Armstrong charged the director with the "responsibility of building acceptance of the University among various publics we serve and promoting loyalty to, interest in and support for the institution."
At the same time that President Armstrong established the Office of Development, plans were being made to create a private, nonprofit, charitable foundation to provide support for Eastern New Mexico University. Armstrong established the Friends of Eastern Committee and organized it with a board of directors in fall 1976. The committee coordinated fundraising efforts with the Portales Foundation that had been in existence for eight years.
The Portales Foundation was incorporated on Jan. 7, 1970. As early as Feb. 1978, discussions began regarding the merger of the Friends of Eastern Committee and the Portales Foundation into one corporation to provide private support for the University. At a meeting on Aug. 2, 1978, the Friends of Eastern Committee and the Portales Foundation officially merged to form the Friends of Eastern Foundation. The Article of Incorporation and Bylaws were approved as amended on that date. The executive director of the foundation is traditionally the same person as the director of development. In February 2005, the board of directors voted and approved changing the name of the organization to the Eastern New Mexico University Foundation (a.k.a. the ENMU Foundation).

Warren Lloyd - Vice President for Advancement and Public Relations
Warren Lloyd
Vice President for Advancement and Public Relations
Beginning his 18-year career in higher education advancement as a graduate assistant in ‘development and alumni-relations,’ Warren was tasked with raising funds for third year students who would not graduate without philanthropic support. A non-traditional student, who started community college after working for his family’s moving company, he was immediately drawn to the impact of helping to provide access and affordability for students and families who would not otherwise be able to attend college.

He has deep experience leading teams to develop dynamic, initiative-based pipelines of annual, major and principal gift constituents, as well as developing highly productive volunteer engagement programs. Through the cultivation of empathy, transparency and empowerment, he develops teams of nuanced, creative and responsive strategists and change managers willing to lean into vulnerability and ambiguity until it becomes the strength of a team. Warren is a strengths-based leader, committed to identifying and aligning people’s ‘superpowers’ to the mission of their shared work and the problems they are trying to solve together.
Warren has held leadership roles at the University at Buffalo, the University of Rochester, The Pennsylvania State University and Colorado College. With their passion and commitment for first generation and non-traditional college students and their diverse set of experiences, Warren and his team are poised to build a ‘best-in-class’ advancement division that ushers Eastern into its next great phase of growth.
Warren received a BFA in Painting and Art History from Pratt Institute, an MFA in New Forms and Installation Art from Rochester Institute of Technology and studied English in the nationally renowned Graduate Poetics Program at the University at Buffalo.
The Opportunity: Director of Annual Giving and Engagement
Positioned on the high plains of Eastern New Mexico, ENMU is New Mexico's largest regional comprehensive university. It is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HIS) and a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. The ENMU System consists of three campuses and ENMU’s Portales campus is the flagship of the system. In his first two years as System Chancellor, Dr. James Johnston, recently finished developing his leadership team which included the hiring of a new Vice President for Student Affairs and the first Vice President of Advancement and Public Relations, Warren Lloyd.
Committed to One Eastern, One Family, One Relationship at a time, the new Advancement program has brought together University Communications, Alumni Affairs and the ENMU Foundation under one strategic vision. Posting the best fundraising year in ENMU’s history for FY2024 and receiving the single largest gift in ENMU’s history during the same year, the program has been investing in infrastructure to enter into its next phase of growth. Eastern New Mexico University seeks a Director of Annual Giving and Engagement (DAGE) to partner with the Advancement team at this critical juncture. The DAGE will play an instrumental role in helping to ideate, implement, manage and grow the University’s first-ever organized annual giving and engagement program designed to develop long-term and meaningful relationships. This will be a rare and exciting opportunity for the right candidate who has an interest in building a program from the ground up with an emphasis on developing the ‘right fit’ annual giving and engagement program for Eastern New Mexico University.
With first generation students and their families being among one of the University’s biggest constituencies, together with a brand-new advancement division, a nuanced and responsive approach to building a culture of engagement and philanthropic partnerships across campus and the alumni base of 27,000, will be a central part of the DAGE’s role. The Director of the Annual Giving and Engagement will be a member of the Vice President for Advancement’s leadership team and play a critical role in ideating, implementing, managing and growing the University’s first comprehensive annual giving program. The annual fund currently raises approximately $550,000 annually. The DAGE will be responsible for developing urgent and impactful annual fund cases for support, integrated with engagement strategies, that are focused on bringing constituents in contact with how each academic, athletic or other university units are changing the world through their work. As donors migrate away from higher education philanthropies and toward cause-based non-profits, the DAGE will be focused on challenging our university partners to think of themselves as cause-based non-profits. The DAGE will play a fundamental role in our growing advancement team. Reporting to the ‘first’ Vice President for Advancement and Public Relations, the DAGE will possess a growth mindset and be a mission-driven professional aligned with the vision and mission of Eastern New Mexico University. A Hispanic Serving Institution, ENMU is committed to providing access and affordability to first-generation and socio-economically underrepresented families and students.
The Director of the Annual Giving and Engagement will play a significant part in co-creating our engagement and fundraising infrastructure. The DAGE will act as a collaborative partner with advancement and alumni relations working to play a critical role in the development of an annual and major gift pipeline. The DAGE will also help inform engagement and solicitation strategies. The candidate will need to possess the fundamental knowledge and competencies of higher education annual giving widely and understand how to scale and tailor best practices into a ‘right fit’ program for Eastern. The DAGE will have the ability to grow in their profession with our developing division.
