The Cannabis Council of Canada (“C3”) is excited to announce the appointment of former Ontario Deputy Premier George Smitherman as its President and CEO.
“As the cannabis industry matures, it’s vital we build a world-class association capable of representing small, medium and large cannabis organizations,” said Megan McCrae Chair of the Cannabis Council of Canada’s Board of Directors, “Finding the right leader is critical to this endeavor and we could not be more pleased to have brought Mr. Smitherman on board to lead this growing organization into its next phase“.
“George’s leadership skills, significant public sector experience and knowledge of Canada’s cannabis sector made him the perfect candidate at this time,” added Cameron Bishop, Vice Chair of the Board, “We look forward to working with him”.
Canada’s regulated cannabis sector has grown rapidly since national legalization in October 2018. In July 2019, the cannabis sector was estimated to have contributed over $8B to Canada’s GDP.
“I’m thrilled to be able to assist Canada’s regulated cannabis sector achieve its full potential nationally and globally. My job is to be a champion for the sector, so that this first-mover advantage is leveraged.” Mr. Smitherman said. “The sector has generated $2 Billion annualized to date, this demonstrates the important growth potential of this industry. It is clear that a diverse and evolving client base exists seeking medical and recreational cannabis products. An exciting future awaits as this industry unfolds and diversifies.” he added.
