Emmanuel College is a community of Christ-centered higher learning that integrates faith, learning, and living with a biblical worldview and fosters spiritual, intellectual, and professional growth.
History
Emmanuel College opened its doors on January 1, 1919, under the name of Franklin Springs Institute. The founder, Reverend George Floyd Taylor, had long desired to begin an institution of higher learning that promoted Christian values. Following the Great Depression, the school closed temporarily in 1931.
The IPHC reopened the school as a high school and junior college in 1933 and gradually progressed from a small community school to a modern, influential junior college. In 1939, the name of the institution was changed to Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.”
The present campus quadrangle was developed in the 1950s, and a focus was placed on the recruitment of excellent faculty members as well as gaining formal accreditation. In 1967, the Emmanuel Junior College was approved for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). In the early 1970s, a four-year School of Christian Ministries was established and accredited by the American Association of Bible Colleges.
Many campus improvements followed in the 1980s, including the construction of two new residence halls and the Wellons Science Resources Center, as well as the completion of the John W. Swails Convocation Center. Major changes in academic programs accompanied the accreditation of the College as a four-year institution by SACSCOC in the 1990s.
By the early 2000s, significant efforts were being made to enhance the campus by expanding academic and athletic programs and by improving the quality of campus life through new residence halls and athletic facilities. The Shaw Athletic Center was constructed as well as two new residence halls to complete Roberson Commons.
Emmanuel College continues its affiliation with the IPHC and has distinguished itself as an exemplary Christian college with a unique blend of quality education and spiritual values. Students who graduate from Emmanuel are not only prepared to make a living, yet they are also inspired and equipped to become Spirit-led world changers!
