Executive Brief

Legal Counsel
Inuvialuit Regional Corporation

January 2021

Essence of the Opportunity

Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) represents the collective Inuvialuit interests in dealings with governments and the world at large and was formed upon signing of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) a land claim settlement. IRC's goal is to continually improve the economic, social and cultural well-being of the Inuvialuit through implementation of the IFA and by all other available means.

The head office for IRC is located in Inuvik. Over 180 employees, both full-time and casual, work for IRC. Inuvialuit beneficiaries currently make up over 80 percent of IRC and Inuvialuit Development Corporation (IDC), its economic development subsidiary, staff positions, including those at the senior divisional management level. Both corporations are committed to increasing the percent of employed beneficiaries throughout all levels of the organization.

The growth and increasing complexity of the enterprise has resulted in the need for additional legal expertise to counsel and support the leadership group. An additional position has been created for a new Legal Counsel who reports to the Chief Administrative Officer and works independently on a small legal team responsible for contract law, securitizations and labour law. The breadth and complexity of legal matters affecting IRC and its diverse divisions and subsidiaries is significant and compelling for lawyers who have an interest in Canada’s Indigenous peoples and their continued evolution.

The ideal candidate is a generalist lawyer who has managed corporate commercial requirements and provided clients with legal and business advice and counsel on a broad range of issues including contracts, regulatory issues, labour, governance, securitizations, acquisitions, and divestitures. Alternatively, experience as in-house counsel in a complex business with parallels to Inuvialuit Regional Corporation and/or its subsidiaries. A strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize work effectively, excellent written communication skills and respectful style will round out the optimal person.

This is a compelling opportunity for a generalist legal expert who is excited about working with and supporting one of Canada’s most successful and progressive Indigenous organizations.
